AIX 6.1 Differences Guide
This IBM® Redbook focuses on the differences introduced in IBM AIX® Version 6.1 when compared to AIX 5L™ Version 5.3. It is intended to help system administrators, developers, and users understand these enhancements and evaluate potential benefits in their own environments. AIX Version 6.1 introduces many new features, including WPAR, advanced security, continuous availability, and managing and monitoring. There are many other enhancements available with AIX Version 6.1, and you can explore them all in this publication.
Introduction to Workload Partition Management in IBM AIX Version 6.1
This IBM Redbooks publication provides a detailed introduction to Workload Partitions (WPARs), a set of completely new software-based system virtualization features introduced in IBM AIX Version 6.1. Adding WPARs to the AIX operating system provides a new level of system virtualization capability. WPARs complement the already existing AIX and System p virtualization features by allowing the partitioning of an AIX instance into multiple environments, the capability to checkpoint and restart the execution of applications without modification of the application code, the capability to relocate a live application into a different AIX instance, and fine-grained control of resource utilization by each application executing within an AIX instance. This book is written for multiple audiences. You can read only the sections that fit your needs without having to read the whole book, cover to cover: Part 1 presents the high level concepts and architecture related to WPARs. The goal in Part 1 is to explain the benefits of using WPAR in different business contexts. This part is intended to be read by Solution Architects and Planners. Part 2 explains the technology supporting WPARs. It details the various components of the WPAR technology, and how they relate to other AIX concepts. Part 2 also presents examples of scenarios that take advantage of WPARs in conjunction with other AIX and System p features. This part is intended to be read by the designers of IT solutions, who need to include this technology in their IT environments, and help system administrators looking for walk-through examples of WPAR deployments.
